Performance index
Here the make-ups are determined not
by actual sporting events but by allocating points depending
on performance. An index on the F.A cup may look something
like the following:
Win = 100 points
Runner up = 70 points
Semi-finalist = 50 points
Quarter finalists =33 points
Last sixteen = 10 points
Others = 0 points
Arsenal 35-38
If you were to buy at £2 and Arsenal won the cup
they would be assigned 100 points. You would win the
difference between 100 and 38 (62 points) multiplied
by your stake of £2 = £124.
However, say you don’t fancy them this year and
want to go low instead, you may decide to sell for £2
at 35. The maximum you could lose would be £140
if they won the competition. However, if your instincts
were right and they went out in the third round, you
would win the difference between 35 and 0 (35 points)
multiplied by your stake, totalling £70.
Wolves 14 - 16
If you were to buy at £2 and Wolves won the cup
they would be assigned 100 points. You would win the
difference between 100 and 16 (84 points) multiplied
by your stake of £2 = £168.
However, if you don’t fancy them and want to
bet they won’t make it to the later stages of
the competition, you may decide to sell for £2
at 14. The maximum you could lose would be £172
if they won the competition (the difference between
100 and the level at which you sold, multiplied by your
stake). However, if they made it to the last 16 but
were then knocked out, you would win the difference
between 14 and 10 (4 points) multiplied by your stake,
totalling £8.
The fact that spread betting allows the bettor to take
a negative view was unheard of before the advent of
this pastime. Previously, it was virtually impossible
to wager that a team or individual could have done badly.
